upgrading to tas books v8 on a network

There are just a few simple steps to upgrade your TAS BOOKS to version 8, but the process is different to how it's worked in the past - so to make sure your upgrade goes smoothly, it's important to make sure that everything is done in the right order.

Step 1: Install the Pervasive Summit database engine on your network server
Step 2: Install the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade on your primary client computer
Step 3: Activate TAS BOOKS v8 on the primary client computer
Step 4: Upgrade your TAS BOOKS data on the primary client computer
Step 5 Install the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade on your additional client computers
Step 6 Activate TAS BOOKS v8 on your additional client computers
 
 

TAS Software

If you have TAS BOOKS network edition, your data will be stored on a network server. Your network server must be running a server operating system; like Windows Server 2003 or Windows Small Business Server (SBS) 2003.
 
If you already have a server running an older version of Pervasive, you may wish to speak to your TAS Business Partner, IT administrator or your computer hardware specialist before installing the updated network engine - see here for more information.

Step 1: Install the Pervasive Summit database engine on your server

Pop your TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade CD into your CD drive.  Most computers will run the CD automatically and display the TAS BOOKS menu. (If your CD doesn't start automatically, then if your CD drive is the d: drive, run d:\setup.exe from your Windows start menu.)
 
Choose Browse CD Contents from the menu.

TAS Software

Windows will display the contents of your TAS BOOKS v8 CD. Depending on the version of Windows you have and the viewing preferences you have set, your screen may look different to the example shown.
 
On your TAS BOOKS v8 CD is a folder called 'Pervasive'. Double-click this folder to open it. There is only one file in the 'Payroll Update' folder.
 
Double-click the Pervasive.exe file to start the Installation Wizard.

The Pervasive Summit installation menu appears.
 
If you have a 64-bit server which is running a 64-bit version of a Windows Server or Windows SBS operating system, then we can supply the 64-bit version of Pervasive Summit - please contact TAS Software Support for assistance.
 
Otherwise choose 'Install PSQL 10.10 Server for Windows (32-bit)'.

TAS Software

The Pervasive Summit installation wizard appears.
 
The screenshots we've shown here are all from 32-bit Server version, but the process is the same whether you have 32-bit or 64-bit server.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

The Pervasive Licence Agreement appears.
 
You must accept the terms of this licence before installing the Pervasive Summit database engine.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

Enter the Pervasive Summit licence key supplied to you by TAS. This separate to your normal TAS BOOKS activation code.
 
If you don't have your Pervasive Summit licence key to hand, contact TAS Support on 1890 946 881 assistance.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

Choose a  'Complete' installation, this ensures that all Pervasive Summit files are installed.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

The installation wizard is now ready to install Pervasive Summit.
 
Click Install to continue.

TAS Software

The wizard will start installing Pervasive Summit. This may take some time.
 

TAS Software

When the Pervasive Summit installation is complete, click Finish to continue.

TAS Software

Pervasive requires Java to be installed on your server. If it's not already present, the installation wizard will automatically continue and install it.

When the Java installation is complete, click OK to continue.

TAS Software

You may be prompted to re-start your server after the Pervasive Summit installation is complete.
 
Click Yes to re-start your server.

Step 2: Install the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade on your primary client computer

The primary client computer is the one you use to activate TAS BOOKS.
 
You'll need to log in to TAS BOOKS using the primary client computer at least once every 90 days, so your primary client computer should be one that is easily accessible - preferably one that you'll be using to run TAS BOOKS regularly.

Pop your TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade CD into your CD drive. Most computers will run the CD automatically and display the TAS BOOKS menu. (If your CD doesn't start automatically, then if your CD drive is the d: drive, run d:\setup.exe from your Windows start menu.)
 
Choose Install Products from the menu.

Choose Upgrade TAS BOOKS from the menu.
 
The screenshots we've shown here are all from TAS BOOKS 3 v8, but the process is the same whether you have TAS BOOKS 2 or TAS BOOKS 3.

The TAS BOOKS installation wizard appears.
 
Click Next to start installing the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade.

TAS Software

The TAS Software Licence Agreement appears.
 
You must accept the terms of this licence before installing TAS BOOKS v8. A printed copy of the licence is included in your TAS BOOKS v8 Upgrade guide.
 
Click Next to continue

TAS Software

The Pervasive Licence Agreement appears.
 
The Pervasive Summit database engine is incorporated as part of TAS BOOKS v8. You must accept the terms of this licence before installing TAS BOOKS v8.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

If you have TAS Payroll installed on the this computer, you may be informed that you also need to install an update for TAS Payroll. Step 7 below will show you how to install this update, when you have finished installing your TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade.
 
Click OK to continue.

TAS Software

The wizard will start installing your TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade. This may take some time.

TAS Software

After the wizard has upgraded your TAS BOOKS, you must restart your computer to ensure that all your system files are updated correctly.
 
Choose 'Yes, I want to restart my computer now' and click Finish.

Step 2: Activate TAS BOOKS v8 on the primary client computer
TAS Software

After you have restarted your computer, double-click on the TAS BOOKS icon on your Windows desktop.
 
The Company Manager window appears.
 
You will need to activate TAS BOOKS v8 before you can start using the program.
 
Select File > Activation from the menubar.

TAS Software

The TAS BOOKS activation wizard appears.
 
In the User Options section, choose 'I want to use TAS BOOKS on more than one computer'.
 
In the Data Location section, choose 'My data is stored on a different computer'.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

Click Browse to select the location of your data on the server.
 
You must use a UNC path (one that looks like \\server\tas_data).
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

The server will also store the activation certificate so that the client computers can access your TAS BOOKS data. You should only change this setting if instructed to do so by TAS Software Support.
 
If you need to change this setting, click Edit to select the location of the activation certificate.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

The Activation Wizard will make some network checks to ensure it can reliably access the data on your primary client computer.
 
If the network tests are successful, click Next to continue.
 
If any of the network tests fail, you should check your network settings to make sure that you have full access to the location of your data.

TAS Software

If you're upgrading from TAS BOOKS v7 and have not moved your data, the activation wizard will find your existing licence information.
 
You will need to enter your new TAS BOOKS v8 activation code, so choose 'Change the Licencing information by entering a new activation code'.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

If you're upgrading from TAS BOOKS v7 and have not moved your data, your serial number and company name will be shown here..
 
If you're upgrading from an earlier version of TAS BOOKS, or if you've changed the location of your data, you should enter your serial number and company name.
 
Click Next to continue.

Enter your TAS BOOKS v8 activation code.
 
  If you don't have the new activation code to hand, you can email support@tassoftware.ie to obtain it.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

The Activation Wizard will display the details of your TAS BOOKS licence.
 
If the activation is unsuccessful, check you have entered your activation code, serial number and company name correctly. If you still need help, contact TAS Support on 1890 946 881 for assistance.
 
Click Finish to close the Activation Wizard.

Step 3: Upgrade your TAS BOOKS data on the primary client computer
TAS Software

After activating your TAS BOOKS v8, you will need to upgrade your data files so they are ready for use. From the Company Manager window, double-click your TAS BOOKS company.

TAS Software

The upgrade window appears.
 
Click OK to continue.

TAS Software

If you did not take a backup of your data before installing the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade, you MUST do so now.
 
If you have already taken a backup, click OK to continue; otherwise click Cancel.

TAS Software

TAS BOOKS will upgrade your data files to version 8 format.
 
If your TAS BOOKS data files are large, this may take some time.

TAS Software

When the upgrade has completed, you are now ready to use TAS BOOKS.
 
Click Yes to log into TAS BOOKS as normal.
 
If you have a multi-company edition of TAS BOOKS, you will need to complete Step 3 for each of your TAS BOOKS companies.

Step 4: Install the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade on your additional client computers

You'll need to install the TAS BOOKS v8 upgrade on your additional client computers. Simply repeat the process in Step 2 on every computer that runs TAS BOOKS.

Step 5: Activate TAS BOOKS v8 on your additional client computers
TAS Software

After you have restarted your computer, double-click on the TAS BOOKS icon on your Windows desktop.
 
The Company Manager window appears.
 
You will need to activate TAS BOOKS v8 on each of your additional client computers before you can start using the program.
 
Select File > Activation from the menubar.

TAS Software

The TAS BOOKS activation wizard appears.
 
In the User Options section, choose 'I want to use TAS BOOKS on more than one computer'.
 
In the Data Location section, choose 'My data is stored on a different computer'.
 
Click Next to continue.

TAS Software

Click Browse to select the location of your data on the server.
 
You must use a UNC path (one that looks like \\server\tas_data).
 
Click Next to continue.

If the activation is unsuccessful, check you have entered your activation code, serial number and company name correctly. If you still need help, contact TAS Support on 1890 946 881 for assistance.
 
Click Finish to close the Activation Wizard.
